Electropolishing is a process that provides metals with brilliant protection. Smooth surfaces are cleaner and more durable against corrosion for a longer period of time than any other metal treatments. Electropolishing removes stains, iron residue, grains of sand, glasses and grease, and produces a particularly fine surface.

Electropolishing is an electrochemical process, which is performed in a bath of acidic electrolyte. The energy is provided by a rectifier. The metal piece is connected to the positive terminal (anode) and the negative terminal is attached to an auxiliary electrode (cathode). During this process, a layer of some 20 micron is removed, resulting in the removal of stains or light grazes. Additionally, it releases contamination that was added during the manufacturing of the piece, and a Cr203 coating (a passive coating that prevents corrosion) is created.

The metal piece is placed in a canister with an acid solution (that varies according to the type of metal), which is charged with a positive charge. Metal plates are dipped opposite to the piece and are charged with a negative charge. When the electric charge is turned on, positive ions of metal and hydrogen flow from the piece to the negative charged metal plates, while electrons and oxygen are transferred from the plates to the piece. Afterwards, the piece undergoes a series of additional rinses and is then dried in order to ensure no unwanted stains or flaws are left.

The process is comprised of several stages: removal of contamination and grease, removal of oxides, cleaning welded surfaces and electropolishing. The piece is rinsed between each stage.

Electropolishing has several significant advantages over other polishing method: it creates a brilliant coat of protection; It can polish surfaces that other polishing methods can't; it can polish surfaces and pieces of all shapes and sizes; it creates a thicker passivation coating through a shorter process; it removes scratches and rounds off corners, creating a healthy and clean surface; it controls the volume of the process and its position; finally, it provides the customer with a treatment much faster than mechanical treatments, while remaining reliable and accurate.

Limat has been providing electropolishing services for over 30 years to customers from different fields with different kinds of metal. The company is committed to a fast and efficient service using the most advanced metal polishing technology in the market with the highest level of finishing.
